Built by Andrew Barclay & Sons of Kilmarnock in 1958, Kingswood began life as part of a British Railways order that was subsequently cancelled — she was built to the same specification as the small fleet of similar Barclay shunters BR did take delivery of, later classified as Class 01. Diverted instead to industrial use, she entered service with the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1959, working at Welsh power stations including Rogerstone and Carmarthen throughout her industrial career.
She arrived at the Avon Valley Railway at Bitton in 1984, and was officially named Kingswood in October 1988, with the Mayor of Kingswood in attendance at the ceremony; the name honours the former Borough of Kingswood, acknowledging the area’s strong industrial manufacturing heritage, where historic builders like Peckett and Sons once thrived. Although the borough itself was abolished in 1996 under local government reorganisation, the locomotive kept her name. She remained at Avon Valley for some 36 years, working both shunting and passenger duties, before moving to Helston Railway late in 2021.
